Estate sale find, vintage original copy of Shell Oil "Happytime Memories."
Hugh Barrett Dobbs was originally hired as a fitness instructor to do an early morning radio exercise program. The gig morphed into a radio show called the “Ship of Joy” program. The show was schmaltz and cheesy, and trite and people loved it. Dobbs called his listeners shipmates and happytimers, referring to himself in third person as "Captain Doobsie" or "skipper."
The Ship of Joy program began in 1926 and was popular on the West Coast. It became sponsored by Shell Motor Oil and eventually changed it's name to the Shell Happytime.  Captain Dobbsie wrote a book about the program complete with uplifting sentiments and poetry in 1931 before the program changed sponsors.
