Description
Offered for your consideration is a pair of vintage5¼ inch wide-range woofers
, made in Japan c.1975. There is no manufacturer name on the drivers, but they are built very well and adhere to the EIA's dimensions for U.S.-made 5¼” speakers.
So, please see my large photos and read the remaining description to decide if these nice quality mid/bass drivers are suitable for your needs.
These woofers are in clean, pristine condition. The sturdy ribbed paper cones are perfect and so are the fabric voice coil dustcaps. Also, the inverted-style surrounds are
permanent
coated textile instead of the fragile foam in widespread use at that time. Plus, the galvanized steel baskets are in great shape as well with no dings or scratches and minimal, if any, oxidation. And, the ‘double-type’ +/- terminals measure the standard .205”, are marked for polarity (green mark = positive), and I de-soldered the lower spades for the new owner’s convenience. Overall, these woofers are very nicely preserved.
Most importantly, the woofers have been fully tested and sound terrific—very clear and detailed mid frequencies extending into lower treble and good bass output for the platform size. I also tested their DC resistance at a closely-matched 7.9 and 8.0Ω, respectively, consistent with a nominal 8 ohm driver rating. Lastly, the basket flanges measure 5¼” across (6” at corners), they stand about 2” tall, and the mounting hole distances are 3⅞” adjacent / 5½” diagonal, c-t-c.
This is a nice find if you want to replace some 5¼” drivers that are blown, have rotted foam surrounds, etc. And, they’re also ready for action in your next vintage-driver speaker project!
