Today we are delighted to offer for sale a rare pair of Barker Playhouse silver-plated teapots! A bit of info on Barker Playhouse, courtesy of Players RI Org:
The Players is a club whose main activity is the production of a variety of plays throughout our season – from Abbott to Zweig with a little Shakespeare and Sondheim thrown in.
Located on Providence’s Historic East Side, we are an amateur group of people collaborating our experience in acting, directing, producing, set design and construction, properties assistance, lighting and sound design and implementation, costuming, and any other activity needed to bring a play to life.
Henry Ames Barker founded The Players in 1909 with Professor Thomas Crosby, Jr. of Brown University. The club is a direct descendant of the Talma Club (founded 1887) and its predecessor the Amateur Dramatic Club. From 1909 to 1932, productions were performed in several Providence venues including The Talma Theatre, Infantry Hall and The Elks Auditorium. In 1932, with a bequest from Henry A. Barker (d. 1929), we moved permanently to our present location, The Barker Playhouse. Many changes have been made over the years to the buildings which have made us one of Providence’s most cherished cultural legacies.
The performing season from October to May features five major productions, each running for six performances over two weekends. We also have many events in the Joseph W. Riker, Jr. Green Room, a smaller stage to try out various projects, which may be one act plays or seminars. The members create, design, build all our sets, costumes, lights, and sound.
The Players, with its tag line “America’s Oldest Little Theatre,” is reputed to be the oldest continuously operating little theatre in the County. The Club is a true American icon, the membership’s indomitable spirit enduring through two world wars, The Great Depression, and an acceleration of the pace of everyday life and competing forms of leisure time.
This fanciful and elegant pair of teapots was expertly manufactured by Meriden Britannia. The Meriden Britannia Company was formed in 1852 in Meriden, Connecticut as a manufacturing company focused on producing wares in britannia metal. By 1876, the Meriden Britannia Company had grown a great deal and the company made significant efforts at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in that year. The company won the First Place medal for plated wares. According to Sotheby's in New York, "The publicity of the award and the impression the firm made on the fair's 8 million visitors was continued by the catalogues and other intensive marketing; by the end of the 1870s Meriden Britannia Co. was considered the largest silverware company in the world." In 1898, the Meriden Britannia Company became part of the larger International Silver Company corporation headquartered in Meriden. Afterward, while part of ISC, many designs were produced under the Meriden Britannia brand with design trade catalogues specifying Meriden Britannia wares.
Each ornate teapot features Baroque-inspired swirled decorations on the handle and spout, with delicate bead border on the neck and base, and etched weave border pattern on body. The front of the large teapot features a fanciful cartouche engraved with "Barker Playhouse". The elegant bespoke teapot was most likely used to serve tea during performance intermissions. The piece is marked on the bottom "Meriden Brit'a 1835 Company".
One teapot presents nicely and is in good antique condition, with surface wear, tarnishing and patina commensurate with age and use. There is minor loss to plating, some scuffing on neck, and two dents on front. The second teapot is in used antique condition, with surface wear, tarnishing and patina commensurate with age and use. There is minor loss to plating and one dent near spout; spout is slightly distorted and bent inward. Please review all photos before purchasing.
This truly rare pair of historical artifacts will make an outstanding addition to any Rhody and New England theatrical memorabilia collection...Fresh to the market from a Providence estate!
