    Description

Offered for your consideration is one (1) vintage
    Quam-Nichols
    8 inch full-range driver
, USA-made in 1966. As you may know, Quam was a notable OE supplier to the domestic speaker industry starting in the 1940’s and they’re the last of the original speaker manufacturers based in Chicago. Per the EIA source/date code on the magnet cover, “270 648”, this speaker was manufactured by Quam (270) in the 48th week of 1966.
So, please have a look at my large photos and read the remaining description to decide if this capable vintage driver is suitable for your needs.
This Quam driver is in clean, near excellent condition. It has a sturdy ribbed paper cone that’s structurally perfect aside from one small edge crack that I secured with clear, flexible glue from the
    back
side. Plus, it has an ancillary or “whizzer” cone for enhanced frequency response which is in perfect shape and has a flawless voice coil dustcap. Also, the surround is permanent, integral to the cone style instead of the fragile foam that would soon be in widespread use.
And, the steel basket, with Quam’s own style of magnet assembly (magnet structure secured to chassis with screws; most companies used only glue), is black-enameled and in great shape with no dings or notable scratches. Lastly, I’ve left a length of the original cloth-sheathed input wires connected to the +/- terminals; the wires can be unscrewed from the spades with ease instead of the usual de-soldering required. Overall, for being some 50 years old, this is a very well-preserved speaker.
Most importantly, it’s been recently tested and sounds terrific—strong, clear midrange, decent low-end for the driver size/type, and highs approaching the threshold of audibility. Plus, since this platform was designed in the tube amp era, it produces good output even at low volumes. And, I tested the DC resistance at 7.9Ω consistent with a nominal 8 ohm driver rating. Lastly, the basket measures 7½” across (just over 8” at the corners), stands about 2¾” tall, and the mounting pattern is the same EIA-standard 5½” adjacent / 7¾” diagonal used on US-made 8” drivers for decades.
As pictured and described, this vintage Quam 8” full-range speaker is offered at a competitive price.
