Offered for your consideration is one (1) vintage
Alnico magnet 5¼ inch full-range driver
manufactured c.1970. This speaker is stamped 10-05-66B and was removed from a single driver cabinet marked only “Japan” on the back side, possibly from
Realistic
, Olson,
Lafayette
, or another importer.
Please have a look at my large photos and read the remaining description to decide if this capable Japanese driver should be yours.
This 5¼” full-range driver is in clean, excellent condition. The sturdy paper cone is flawless and so is the vented voice coil dustcap. Plus, the inverted surround is
permanent
textile, factory coated for added durability, instead of the fragile foam that would soon come into widespread industry use. And, the anodized steel basket is in great shape with no dents, scratches, or oxidation, just a bit of mounting putty residue on the back side. Lastly, the +/- terminals are marked for polarity and have never been soldered on the spades. Overall, this 50+ year-old Japanese speaker is very nicely preserved.
Most importantly, it’s been fully tested and sounds remarkable with fast, detailed midrange, sparkly highs exceeding the audibility threshold, and decent low end for the platform type. Plus, it has the Alnico magnet warmth of tone sought after by audiophiles and others “in the know”. And, I tested its DC resistance at 7.5Ω consistent with a nominal 8 ohm driver rating. Lastly, the basket measures 5¼” across (5⅞” from corners), it stands 2¾” tall, and the mounting holes are spaced 3⅞” adjacent / 5½” diagonal apart, c-t-c.
So, as pictured and described, this terrific 5¼” full-range Alnico magnet driver is offered at a competitive price.
