    Description

    We are offering a Marie Tempest 1901 Autograph Card and Three Theatre Broadsides for Plays in which Tempest performed.
    The autograph card is in an envelope that has been pasted on a 13 1/2" x 16 1/4" thick poster board (that had been part of a scrapbook).  Also on the board are three theatre broadsides:
    "Marriage of Kitty
    ", Alvin Theatre, Pittsburgh, 1904;
    "
    Caste"
    , Olympic Theatre, St. Louis, 1910; and "
    The Duke of Killicrankie
    "
    , Lyceum Theatre, NYC, 1915.
    Marie Tempest (1864-1942) was an English actress and singer.  She became a famous soprano in late Victorian light opera and Edwardian musical comedies, later becoming a leading comic actress touring widely in North America.
    This autograph had been requested by a woman by the name of Emily J. Stanton, the owner of the original scrapbook.
    Emily Stanton must have been an avid theatre-goer (and collector), as we have many of these scrapbook boards, (some of which are on eBay now; some we will be listing later on) with theatre broadsides or programs, together with an autograph card, some accompanied by a letter, from a major actor or actress who performed in the plays.  The plays that Stanton attended were in major U.S. cites, such as New York and Los Angeles, and also in London.
