Demystifying blade / knife handle compatibility:
Generally speaking, light duty blades (those with 1/4" shanks) should be paired with light duty knife handles; medium duty blades (the majority of those with 3/8" shanks) should be paired with medium duty handles, and the larger blades (such as #26 whittling blades, pull/razor saws, and certain other specialty use items, most of which also have 3/8" shanks) should be used with heavy duty knife handles.  The blade shank is the squared off part of the blade that slots into the knife handle.  It's physically possible to fit 1/4" shank into 3/8" collet, but it's not
recommended.  Because light duty blades are mostly shorter than medium duty blades, the cutting edge of light duty blades may feel unnaturally close to the thicker collet of a medium duty handle.  And it's not possible at all to fit a 3/8" shank into a 1/4" handle.
