    Description

    From a Richmond, Virginia estate:
A unique set of six (6) volumes, hundreds of pages in total, about 50% (probably 250ish) of which are original 8x"x10"tracings on onion skin paper.  The volumes are 1930s "Elbe" springback binders and the pages are obviously the personal notes, sketches and mimeographed pages of a 1930/40s New York Costume & Dress Designer.  The springback binder burps open and the pages can be removed, copied or re-organized.
This is thousands of hours of work--tracing and design.  Obviously a theatre person from the 30s/40s.
4 volumes are mostly ORIGINAL Pattern Books & Notes:
    1)  "Crinoline" with lots of shadow silhouettes, some sketches, some typewritten pages and some mimeographed pages (which I believe to be original notes, though they were typed and circulated).
    2)  "Early & Late Georgian" with a concentration on the female, including lots of headwear sketches and positions of walking, etc.  Some typewritten and mimeographed pages (again, original notes that were typed and circulated).
    3)  "Classical Greek"
with a concentration on the female, including lots of headwear sketches and positions of walking, etc.  Some typewritten and mimeographed pages (again, original notes that were typed and circulated).  Handwritten notes and sketches also loose inside front cover.
    4)  "Renaissance"
with a concentration on both make and the female, including lots of headwear sketches and positions of walking, etc.  Only a few typewritten and mimeographed pages (again, original notes that were typed and circulated).  Notes loose inside front cover.
    2 Volumes:
    5)  "Egyptian"-not really sketches - cut and pasted from books and magazines.  There are some handwritten notes and sketches inside the back cover.
    6
)  Furniture and textiles - cut and pasted from books and magazines, all periods.
Volumes 1-4 are the wonderful original tracings and sketches and designs.
It is my theory (because there is a small piece of Miller & Rhoads, Richmond stationery present (1950s), that these belonged to a Broadway designer who brought them to Richmond and used them as the library for his/her own designs here in Richmond.
    Regretfully, no name or date.
The couple of hundred onion skin sketches are amazing.
