    Description

    We are offering a
    RARE
Souvenir of the 100th Performance of the Marvelous Schaffer Troupe in Imre Kiralfy's Superb Spectacle "
    America
    " on Aug. 23, 1893.
The show told the story of American history to the current time.  The performance was held at The Auditorium Theatre in Chicago, and was intentionally planned to coincide with the Columbian Exposition in Chicago, continuing the theme of the Expo which was the 400th anniversary of Columbus's discovery of America.  The souvenir (5 1/2" x 6 3/4") is made up of cardboards in the shape of the American shield, with pictures of the performers and text about the family troupe and about the show itself, all bound together with ribbon (ribbon is not original, has been replaced).  The Schaffer Troupe came from a long family line of famous European acrobats, dancers, jugglers and athletes, who had performed in all the European capitals and had received many jewels and medals from Royalty that were passed down through the generations.  They had performed for the Shah of Persia, King Christian of Denmark, the Prince of Wales, Czar of Russia, and Crown Prince Rudolph of Austria.  This was their first engagement in the U.S.  The family members, as identified in the pictures, were: Sylvester (the father), Carlos, Heinrich, Wilhelm, Cyrene,
    Sylvester, Jr.
    , and Stefanie.
Also, definitely worth mentioning, is the fact that Sylvester Schaffer, Jr. (1885-1949) went on to become a renowned magician, painter, juggler, acrobat, marksman, violinist, and actor, excelling in each of these disciplines.  He was considered the most talented man in the world, and performed in his native Germany.  In 1914 he toured America, performing in New York, California and other states.  When World War I ended, Schaffer returned to Germany where he appeared in leading roles in a series of films.  **Great pictures of him are online with many details about him!**  CONDITION: Excellent; slight soiling on the cover, back of last page has a little paper residue from having been in a scrapbook.
