Description
Up for sale is this invitation to attend the Seventh Entertainment and Ball of the Athletic Minstrels at Platt's Hall on Tuesday Eve, Feb 19, 1880. It is interesting that the invitation has pre-printed "Mr. ....and Ladies". The only invited men who could bring a lady along. Makes sense for the time period when there were still views against women attending theatre without an escort. You can thank the museums for braking that barrier down. The Athletic Minstrels were a troupe out of Sacramento. The Sacramento Daily Union has an article about them in it's August 27, 1897 issue.
Platt's Hall was in the Financial District of San Francisco. It was built in 1860 and demolished in 1890.
I can't make out the name of who the invitation is made out to...J. J. Stevens Esquire ??? It was presented to him by John Herman.
This rare piece of San Francisco theatre history measures 2 1/2" by 4 3/4". There are a few marks on the back, age related maybe. Otherwise it is in great condition.
